The west wall at Smoky Mountain Tower.

In just 10 days, Phyllis and I are planning to go back to Gatlinburg for a really big project at Smoky Mountain Tower. This picture shows the west side (the side that faces Ober Gatlinburg). The west side really takes a beating from the weather - sun, wind, rain, etc.

See those 3 odd-shaped window at the top - above the 3 regular windows? That's the Tower Room. Here's a closer picture:

Because of the weather, those windows started leaking. We replaced the regular rectangle windows last year, thinking that would stop the leaks. But there still seems to be water coming in when there is a heavy rain. So we have our good friend, Ray Phillips (more about him in another post), planning to bring in a crew to redo the whole west wall. We'll probably just take out those windows. But he also will replace some bad siding and fix some damaged areas around the chimney.

The part that's tough about this is that there is no way to get to that wall. So Ray will have to build a scaffold up the wall to provide a platform for his workers. Right now, the biggest concern is the weather. I just checked the forecast and it's supposed to rain all next week. If that happens, the whole project will have to be delayed until probably next fall, because Smoky Mountain Tower is almost completely booked until mid-August.

Speaking of which, don't forget our specials for April and May. We still have some dates open at both Smoky Mountain Tower and All Decked Out. You can find all the details on our Specials pages - just click on the cabin names above.

Keep watching - we'll try to give you regular updates from Gatlinburg.
